Campaign Overview

Established in 1968, Capital Area Counseling Service, Inc. (CACS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit agency, which primarily provides mental health and addiction services to residents of nine counties in central South Dakota: Buffalo, Haakon, Hughes, Hyde, Jones, Lyman, Potter, Stanley and Sully. Services include mental health assessment and therapy, psychiatric rehabilitation, psychiatry, medication management, nursing, family-based services, therapeutic foster care, addiction assessment and treatment, and continued care. In 2015, CACS provided treatment services for nearly 1,600 youth and adults with a wide variety of diagnoses.

Capital Area Counseling Service, Inc. aspires to be a great place to receive care and a great place to work in South Dakota.

Paul J. Strawhecker, Inc. of Omaha, Nebraska, recently conducted a philanthropic planning study for Capital Area Counseling Service, Inc. (CACS) to evaluate the prospect of the agency building a new facility in Pierre. The study determined there is regional support of a new facility for CACS. The majority of participants felt that the agency’s current facilities are not adequate or desirable for providing treatment. Participants also had questions about the need for mental health services in central South Dakota.

"There are many very talented people who work for CACS. Their current environment is not conducive to integrate the care needed to their clients."

To ensure efficient delivery of services for clients and staff, CACS seeks to construct a new, 24,000 sq. ft. outpatient mental health and addiction treatment facility. This facility will be located on an approximately three-acre site in the northeast section of Pierre and is located on the corner of Eastgate and Marquette. The projected cost of the new facility for CACS is $4 million, including construction costs, furnishings, and equipment.
