Capital Area Counseling Services to Host Recovery Month Awareness Walk

Pierre, SD – Capital Area Counseling Services continues to celebrate their recognition of September as Recovery Month. It is imperative to promote an increased awareness, treatment and education on the topics of both substance use and mental health. In an effort to promote national observance and education, CACS will be hosting a color walk September 28th at 6PM at Steamboat Park in celebration of the commitment to recovery. The walk will focus on “Steps to Recovery” and hope to raise understanding about the readjustment of individuals dealing with substance use or mental health.

The management of substance use and mental issues impacts more individuals than one would think. In 2015, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration published a survey reporting 3.9% of South Dakotan adults have seriously considered suicide. Taking into account the family and friends of that 3.9%, raises the overall impact of suicide greatly. There were also reports of 2.2% of illicit drug users (ages 12 and above) who have struggled with substance dependence.

With that, what is to be done? Literally, we as a community can take “Steps” to raise awareness and appreciation for the individuals who are struggling with substances and mental illness. Today’s event is part of Recovery Month, a national observance sponsored by SAMHSA, within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The color walk unifies people who have progressive goals in sight. All “walks” of life are encouraged to participate in the color walk: survivors, advocates, prevention and treatment teams, friends, and family of those impacted.

“With the community showing support at such an event like this Color Walk, it is our hope that those affected by mental illness and substance use disorders can see support all around them. Through this support and proper treatment, a healthy lifestyle is attainable for all affected.” Matt Judson, CACS Board of Directors.
